Description

Penn State University Press seeks an experienced Acquisitions Editor for a growing books program. The Acquisitions Editor will be responsible for acquiring and transmitting into production 20-25 new book titles per year in the humanities and social sciences. Areas of acquisition will include rhetoric and communication studies, American studies, and other areas as desired, with the support of the Editor-in-Chief. The Acquisitions Editor will join a collaborative team of editors working to develop balanced and innovative lists of top-quality scholarly and trade titles.

Specific duties of the position include soliciting and evaluating book manuscripts, either independently or in conjunction with a series editor; traveling to 4-6 academic conferences per year; conducting peer review of manuscripts under consideration; compiling new book proposals and title budgets; presenting new projects to in-house committees and to the faculty editorial board for approval; preparing final manuscripts for production; and participating in staff meetings about titles in production and general Press operations.

The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate the following: at least four years’ experience working in book acquisitions or development; functional knowledge of assigned academic list areas, including a familiarity with important trends and key scholars in the field; strong networking abilities associated with soliciting manuscripts from a broad range of scholars and personality types; an understanding of the mechanics of list-building and -shaping as these relate both to established Press lists and to new areas of acquisition; an awareness of the finances of book publishing, including experience with title budgets and an understanding of larger issues impacting the academic marketplace; excellent communication skills; and a strong commitment to diversity, equity, respect, and inclusion. This is a new, on-site position at Penn State University Press, a division of The Pennsylvania State University Libraries and Scholarly Communications.
