Senior Acquisitions Editor, Life Sciences



The University of Chicago Press is seeking an experienced and accomplished
editor to assume responsibility for the Press's lists in life sciences. The
senior editor will oversee and evolve a program of 20-30 titles a year,
with a list that includes trade, scholarly, course, and reference books
across a range of disciplines, currently including behavior, botany,
conservation, ecology, evolution, marine biology, natural history, and
paleobiology. The science list, and titles sponsored by the senior editor,
are expected to contribute significantly to the Press's income. The senior
editor will collaborate closely with other Press departments to manage
projects throughout their lifecycle.  The position is based on the
University’s Hyde Park campus.


Maintains and expands network of authors, advisors, and agents by email,
mail, telephone, and in person during editorial trips and at academic
conferences. Engages routinely with faculty at the University and
throughout Chicago's scientific community as a source of potential

Invites and commissions appropriate projects in assigned subject areas and
evaluates unsolicited submissions. Maintains sense of key research,
literature and authors in the life sciences.

Seeks advice on proposals and manuscripts from qualified referees and
arranges formal review. Works with authors on arranging appropriate
revisions and provides editorial advice to supplement reviewer commentary.
Acts as primary liaison for author, both as author "advocate" in
stimulating interest and support for a project internally at the Press and
as representative of the Press responsible for upholding publication and
financial policies.

Presents projects at biweekly Editorial Committee meeting and seeks
approval from the Press faculty board at monthly Board meetings. Prepares
book budgets and sales projections, and proposes contract terms to Press
management. Negotiates contracts with authors and agents for books

Collaborates with other Press departments to ensure that accepted books are
given appropriate levels of editing, design, production, and marketing,
including those particular to the complexities of scientific works.
Presents projects at transmittal meetings, marketing/production meetings,
and biannual sales meetings.

Collaborates with and assists in mentoring editorial associate and student


  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Five or more years of work in book publishing, with at least two years of acquisitions experience in the life sciences or other closely aligned fields required.
  • Demonstrable track record of trade, scholarly, and professional acquisitions required;
  • A list of signed and published books is required and should accompany the application.
  • Ability to coordinate the work of others required.
