Science and Public Health Acquiring Editor


Indiana University Press, a dynamic and forward thinking scholarly publisher located in the beautiful town of Bloomington, Indiana, seeks a full-time Science and Public Health Acquiring Editor to identify, solicit, evaluate, acquire, and oversee the publication of a minimum of 25 scholarly and trade publishing projects a year in public health, science, and related areas consonant with the strategic plan of the Press. 


Acquire and publish a minimum of 25 books per year in public health, science, and other areas as directed. Make strategic list-building plans to meet revenue goals and to fulfill the mission of the press by conducting market research, developing thorough familiarity with the appropriate academic fields, and evaluating the performance of current and previous publications. Identify publishable manuscripts; establish and engage in personal contact with prospective authors; prepare proposals for acceptance of manuscripts, including overseeing the peer review process, developing marketing plans, and preparing financial projections. Oversee the development and editing of contracted manuscripts, recommending revisions as needed. Implement publishing strategies for books acquired. Evaluate content for publication and make decisions about interiors and illustrations. Evaluate copyright status of material to be included in books. Write promotional copy for use in catalogs, advertisements, web pages, and on book covers. Serve as primary liaison between authors and Indiana University Press. Participate in general administrative meetings of IU. Travel to national and international scholarly meetings to represent Indiana University Press, manage book exhibits, meet with authors, and sell books.


Bachelor's degree in public health, science, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.  Three years scholarly publishing experience, preferably in acquisitions and list building. Some experience working with budgets preferred. Combinations of related education and experience will be considered.  Computer literacy and competency including facility with using social media and other online resources.  Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading, organizational, and interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to interact tactfully, courteously, and with discretion; the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships; and the ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
