Overview

The Princeton University Press, an independent publisher of general and scholarly books, seeks outstanding applicants for the position of Director.  Reporting to the Press’s Board of Trustees, the Director is responsible for advancing the Press’s exceptional editorial record, providing dynamic leadership of an international organization, managing all business operations, and promoting a clear vision and strategy for academic publication in a changing landscape.

In addition to overseeing the Press’s editorial, sales, marketing, production, financial, and technological teams, the Director must serve as an industry innovator capable of extending the Press’s global reach.  In keeping with Princeton University’s commitment to serve the nation and the world, the Press works to connect scholars, students, and serious readers everywhere.  The Director is the principle liaison between the Press and the University, maintaining the Press’s reputation for peerless scholarly publishing.

Responsibilities

  • Promote a consistent editorial vision and publishing program that will continue the Press’s reputation for strength across academic fields
  • Manage all branches of the Press in consultation with the Board of Trustees
  • Articulate a clear global mission and expand the Press’s presence in international markets, including the current offices in Princeton, Oxford, and Beijing
  • Guide the Press’s relationship to new technologies and delivery formats
  • Institute creative strategies for marketing to readers
  • Steward large-scale information systems; aggregate, manage, analyze, and share data
  • Serve as the public representative for the Press in national and international arenas

 

Essential Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of all aspects of scholarly publishing
  • Excellent editorial judgment
  • Significant experience in the supervisory management of a large team
  • Thorough appreciation of the challenges facing scholarly communications (for universities, scholars, academic publishers, libraries, and booksellers)
  • Deep understanding of general academic culture
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Superior communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as effective interpersonal skills
  • Ability to establish partnerships within the Press and build collaborative relationships with peer institutions and agencies
