The Art of Acquisitions

From the AAUP Acquisitions Editorial Committee

Acquisitions Hangouts

A monthly series of informal panels, hosted on the YouTube Live platform, organized by the AAUP Acquisitions Editorial Committee on topics that explore “The Art of Acquisitions.” Intended primarily for the AAUP community, the Hangouts will bring groups of acquisitions editors together to share their wit, wisdom, and hard-won experience.

Q&A with attendees will be an important part of the events—look for the chat window in the broadcast window or tweet questions with the #artofACQ tag.

Judging a Book by Its Cover: The Role of Authors and Acquisitions Editors in Cover Designs

This hangout explores book design, author-expectation, and marketing-related issues that good acquisitions editors must be able to navigate. We hope to have a good conversation---with each presenter bringing stories to share from their experience---examining strategies acquisitions editors can use to resolve the creative tensions that can occur in the process of producing a cover that everyone (designers, authors, readers, marketers, directors, libraries, booksellers) is delighted by. We will compare strategies for consensus- building; virtues of images vs. type only covers; cost control for limited market books; the ups and downs of graphically representing "what the book is about" and the related "avoiding glaring errors" (like, hypothetically, the silhouette of a WWII plane for a WWI book). We might also bump up against some awkward questions like, "why do we care? when our books our found via databases anyway?" or "who
truly gets the final call on a cover at your press?" Questions and comments are encouraged from the audience.

Best Practices for Peer Review

This 2016 handbook is a resource for member publishers, acquisitions editors both new and experienced, faculty editorial boards, scholarly authors and researchers, and new scholarly publishing programs. The Best Practices handbook was developed by the Association's Acquisitions Editorial Committee through a consensus-building two-year process to articulate a set of practices that comprise a rigorous process of peer review.
