Past Committees & Task Forces
The following task forces and committees have completed their charges and been retired. Their work, in the form of research, reports, handbooks, and recommendations to the board and staff, has been of immense value to the Association.
AAUP Structure Task Force
As part of the implementation of the strategic plan, the AAUP Board established this task force to help determine if the previous structure of the Association was in line with the needs of the membership. The members of the task force represented all of the previous tiers and member types (except Introductory) in order to ensure a variety of perspectives.
The Business Handbook Task Force
Charged with creating and maintaining the AAUP Business Handbook, a tool that continues to be an essential reference for all AAUP members. The latest edition of the Handbook can be found via the AAUPWiki.
Task Force on Committees and Task Forces
Chaired by Richard Brown (Georgetown), this task force undertook a comprehensive review of the Association's committee structure and policies. Recommendations for new committees, revised nominating procedures, and normalized appointment schedules were submitted to the AAUP Board in June 2009 and adopted over subsequent terms.
This committee was tasked with examining diversity and diversity policies within the AAUP community. The legacy of the many years' work of the Diversity Committee includes the poster Promoting a Positive Work Culture, a compilation of online resources, and the creation of a diversity grant program to bring member staff to the AAUP Annual Meeting.
Task Force on Economic Models
The Economic Models Task Force was established by 2009-2010 AAUP President Kathleen Keane (Johns Hopkins) to study and report on three broad issues in a changing scholarly communications ecology: the movement for "free and universal access," scholars' publication needs in the 21st century, and how the academic community can work together to address new challenges. This committee, currently suspended, has operated for many years as a committee, a sub-committee, a task force, and an ad hoc working group. Committee members have worked to keep the full association apprised of environmental concerns and best practices in publishing through such activities as newsletter articles, conference panels, work with the Book Industry Environmental Council, and tools such as "How to Green Your Office."
National Sales Account Task Force
This group was formed by 2003-04 President Seetha Srinivasan (Mississippi) with the goal of broadening the AAUP membership's understanding of national sales accounts, and determining if there were any practical steps university presses might take to improve relationships with those accounts. In addition to a series of very helpful reports, the task force's work resulted in discounted benefit programs with sales data services such as Publisher Alley and Nielsen BookScan.
Strategic Plan Task Force
2005-06 President Lynne Withey (California) appointed a strategic planning group, chaired by Alex Holzman (Temple). The 2007 AAUP Strategic Plan was adopted by the Board and helps to shape the policies and priorities of the Association. Read more >
